March 11 marks a year since Japan’s devastating earthquake, and subsequent tsunami and nuclear meltdown.
The 9.0 magnitude quake shifted the earth’s axis and killed nearly 16,000 people. Over 3,200 people remain missing today.
Entire towns were wiped out down the coastline - and most remain vacated today.
The Fukushima power plant was nearly destroyed, and the New York Times says the reactors came much closer to catastrophe than the Japanese government said. The government even considered a complete evacuation of Tokyo.
Today people across Japan paused at 2:46pm local time (just after midnight ET), the same time the 9.0 quake struck, for a moment of silence, prayer and reflection.
Many questions remain about rebuilding villages, cleaning up the nuclear exclusion zone, the effects of radiation, and the overall debate about nuclear power in Japan.
Our thoughts remain with those impacted.

Tokyo Electric Power Company confirmed this weekend that Fukushima’s No. 1 fuel assembly melted within 16 hours of March’s tsunami.
Overall, four of the plant’s six reactors were damaged, with two others at least partially melted. TEPCO previously stated it would reduce radiation at sustained levels within three months. More from Bloomberg
As the country continues to get rocked by mild to strong earthquakes,  Japan will release a revised nuclear plan on Tuesday.

March 11’s 9.0 earthquake that slammed Japan was so powerful, the force pulled the entire country out and down deeper into the sea.
The impacted coastal communities now endure regular flooding at high tide thanks to a combination of the lowered elevation and sea walls damaged by the tsunamis.
Scientists say this is a permanent concern for some communities, as the country has sunk as much as 4 feet in spots, and shifted inland areas seaward by feet.
“We thought this slippage would happen gradually, bit by bit. We didn’t expect it to happen all at once,” says Testuro Imakiire, a researcher at Japan’s Geospatial Information Authority.
The movement of the whole country is the first time this phenomena has been recorded anywhere on the planet since measurements began in the late 19th century.
Sadly, Japan faces more potential danger as the heavy summer rains begin in just a few short weeks.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 hit Japan today, resulting in tsunami warnings for 20 countries, including Hawaii and the US mainland.
The latter appears to have fared well, but the devastation in Japan will likely lead to billions of dollars and years of recovery.
