Phoenix, Arizona was hit by its fourth haboob of the summer on Friday.
A strong weather system pushed a large dust cloud over most of the city late in the afternoon. The city also hit a record 117-degrees on Friday.
Phoenix has been hit by a wall of dust with highly unusual frequency this summer, starting on July 5, then again on July 18 and Aug. 19.
Experts say haboobs only occur in Arizona, Africa’s Sahara desert and parts of the Middle East because of dry conditions and large amounts of sand.
Sandstorms are not unusual in Arizona, but they’re generally a fraction of what swept over Phoenix Tuesday night.
The dust storm was over 8,000 feet high at some points, driven by 60 MPH winds. In the end, the storm ran over 150 miles before dissipating.
“The magnitude of this event was really exceptional,” said Ken Waters, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Phoenix. “People who have lived in Arizona for 30, 35 years say this is the biggest one they’ve seen.”
Phoenix residents likely enjoyed very long lines at the car wash all weekend.
