Hackers are suspected of launching a cyber attack on the city water treatment system of Springfield, Illinois.
The incident occurred on November 8, 2011, and the FBI and Homeland Security are investigating.
According to reports, hackers obtained remote access to the control system of the public water treatment plant. They turned a single pump off and on repeatedly, causing it to burn out.
The hack was detected while the pump was being repaired, but the intruders apparently had access to the plant control system for up to three months beforehand.
Experts said the incident reveals a growing interest in global infrastructure by cyber criminals.
Authorities traced the hackers’ IP address to Russia, and they caution the foreign attack is the first of its kind.
